As summer draws to a close, the air outside the historic Neda Mine State Natural Area comes alive as bats from across a four-state region travel to the mine for their annual fall swarm. Located along the scenic Niagara Escarpment near Mayville, Wisconsin, this abandoned 19th-century iron ore mine serves as one of the largest bat hibernacula in the Midwest. Witness one of Wisconsin’s most extraordinary hidden wildlife phenomena as these bats gather in a mesmerizing aerial display—circling, diving, and pirouetting in front of the mine's gated entrances starting just one hour after sunset. Join us as we learn from a bat and cave specialist from the Wisconsin DNR’s Bat Program about the mine and the biology and natural history of its winged inhabitants.
Thank you for supporting some of Wisconsin’s most treasured and threatened species. Proceeds from this event support WBCN’s bat conservation efforts across Wisconsin, which include site maintenance and stewardship of Neda Mine.
